Chapter 8 Conspicuity Markings

www.highwayvisibility.co.uk is a new dedicated online ordering service for vehicle safety markings where you can source professionally templated and factory engineered full or part rear chevron kits for all leading makes of van and car.

The rules:

Chapter 8, section 5 of the DfT Traffic Signs Manual provides safety guidelines and recommendations for companies operating on public highways

…All vehicles stopping on the highway for work purposes should be equipped with high visibility rear marking. (This applies to cars, vans, specialist vehicles, HGVs and road maintenance vehicles.)

…Markings should include chevron markings of alternate red retro-reflective and non-reflective yellow fluorescent material…

…Red retro-reflective tape should be applied to all rear facing edges of open doors, guard rails and equipment lockers.

…The markings should cover as much of the rear-facing portion of the vehicle as possible without obscuring windows, vehicle lighting or registration plates.

In addition to these guidelines we also recommend that

…Retro-reflective strips should be applied to the sides of vehicles used to install or remove highway maintenance or temporary traffic management equipment.

Many highway construction and maintenance companies have now adopted these guidelines as best practice and will not allow work vehicles onto site unless they are Chapter 8 compliant with twin lights/roof bar and appropriate markings.
